Snowbird Weddings

A Photographer's Guide to Little Cottonwood Canyon's Most Iconic Resort Venue

📍 Snowbird, Utah | Little Cottonwood Canyon

I've photographed dozens of weddings at Snowbird over the past twelve years. It's the venue I know better than any other, and it remains one of my favorites. There's a reason couples keep choosing it, and a reason I keep loving to shoot here. The combination of dramatic canyon scenery, modern architecture, world-class amenities, and multiple distinct venue spaces makes it one of the most versatile and spectacular wedding destinations in Utah.

If you're considering Snowbird, here's everything I know.

The Setting

Snowbird sits at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon, about 35 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City. The canyon itself is one of the most dramatic in the Wasatch — steep granite walls, evergreen forests, and some of the most striking mountain scenery in the state. The resort's architecture leans deliberately into contrast with all of that: concrete, exposed metal, floor-to-ceiling glass. It's modern and minimal where the mountains are wild and rugged, and that contrast is part of what makes Snowbird visually distinctive.

One thing to plan for in Little Cottonwood Canyon: the sun drops behind the ridgeline earlier than the official sunset time. You still get a beautiful down-canyon glow around sunset, but build your portrait timeline accordingly. Earlier is better.

The Venue Spaces

Snowbird offers five distinct wedding venues, each with both indoor and outdoor options. No two feel the same. Choosing the right one depends on your guest count, your aesthetic, and what kind of mountain experience you're after.

The Summit

The Summit is Snowbird's most extraordinary venue, and the most unforgettable. Located at 11,000 feet at the top of the mountain, your guests reach it by aerial tram — a ten-minute ride that becomes part of the experience. People pile in, the tram lifts off, and the valley opens up below. It's fun, festive, and sets a tone before the wedding even begins.

Up top, the feeling is unlike anything else in Utah. You're genuinely on a mountain summit. The views stretch nearly 360 degrees — Little Cottonwood Canyon below, the Heber Valley, the Salt Lake Valley, and peak after peak in every direction. There are basically no trees up here, just open sky and mountain views. The patio areas are spacious, the building has windows and terraces facing multiple directions, and the sunsets from this altitude are some of the most spectacular I've ever photographed.

For portraits, I love getting to the edge of the summit where you can look down over the valley. On a clear afternoon the light is open and beautiful. The tram arriving against the mountain backdrop makes for a fun candid moment, and there are even some great architectural shots to be had — couples framed in a concrete archway with the Snowbird logo and peaks behind them. It works if you lean into it.

The Summit accommodates up to 200 guests and is available year-round.

The Magpie Terrace and Golden Cliff

This is the other most popular combination at Snowbird, and for good reason. Where the Summit gives you the on-top-of-the-world experience, Magpie and Golden Cliff give you something more intimate — a wooded canyon setting with mountain views, and a flow between spaces that works beautifully for a full wedding day.

The Magpie Terrace is the ceremony space just off the Cliff Lodge, tucked among aspen with mountain views visible behind. It's cozy and wooded rather than wide open, which creates a completely different feeling than the Summit. Ceremonies here feel sheltered and warm, with the canyon trees framing everything naturally.

After the ceremony, guests flow over to the patio just off the Golden Cliff for cocktail hour before moving inside for dinner and dancing. The Golden Cliff is a two-story indoor space with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the mountain and tram, with the adjoining terrace providing additional outdoor space. The flow is seamless and the spaces complement each other well.

For portraits here I head just to the side of the Magpie Terrace where there's a beautiful stand of aspen trees and open mountain views right next to each other. It takes maybe two minutes to walk there and you have two completely different portrait settings within a few steps. That kind of variety without any hiking is a real asset on a wedding day.

Golden Cliff accommodates up to 220 guests indoors; Magpie Terrace holds 170 outdoors.

The Primrose and Outdoor Amphitheater

The Primrose combination is the most tucked-away option at Snowbird. The outdoor amphitheater sits among towering pine trees with the mountains peeking through the branches — it has a quiet, almost tree-fort quality that I find really charming. The mountain views are less prominent here than at the other venues, but the wooded setting has its own beautiful character.

The adjoining Primrose ballroom has large windows and seats up to 250 for dinner. It's a less common choice than the Summit or Magpie, but for couples who want a forested, intimate feel rather than epic panoramas, it's worth a close look.

For portraits here I lean into the pine trees and the forest setting — soft light filtering through the canopy, the sense of being deep in the canyon woods.

The Terrace Tent

The largest venue option at Snowbird, the Terrace Tent is an open-air tent on the mountain accessed by the Chickadee chairlift. With room for up to 600 guests, it's Snowbird's choice for very large celebrations. Available June through August due to weather considerations.

The Aerie

Situated at the top of the Cliff Lodge, the Aerie is Snowbird's most intimate venue — room for 60 on the balcony and 100 inside. The rooftop setting offers canyon and mountain views in a light, warm space with wood accents and modern styling. It's a beautiful option for smaller weddings that still want an elevated (literally) Snowbird experience.

The Full Snowbird Experience

Snowbird is an exceptional destination wedding venue. Everything is on-site: the Cliff Lodge with its rooms and suites, the Cliff Spa, multiple restaurants, and a full slate of outdoor activities. Guests who stay the weekend can hike, mountain bike, ride the Alpine Slide and Mountain Coaster, or simply relax in the canyon. In winter, they're steps from some of the best skiing in North America.

The resort handles all food and beverage in-house, and their culinary team is consistently excellent. A wonderful wedding coordinator is included, and works seamlessly with your planner. Their team is one of my favorites to work with. They are extremely experienced, friendly, and helpful. Catering covers everything from setup to cleanup, and the couple receives a complimentary room on their wedding night. Discounted group lodging, spa packages, and airport transportation are all available for guests.

Who Is Snowbird For?

Snowbird is for couples who love the mountains — ideally couples for whom Snowbird itself means something. Many of my Snowbird couples ski here, got engaged here, or have a history with this canyon. That connection adds something real to the day.

It's also one of Utah's strongest destination wedding venues. Out-of-town guests have everything they need right on the property, and the experience of being in Little Cottonwood Canyon — the drama of the scenery, the quality of the food and lodging, the activities — makes it a true wedding weekend rather than just a wedding day.

If you want breathtaking mountain scenery, a modern aesthetic, world-class amenities, and a venue that can scale from 60 to 600 guests, Snowbird is hard to beat.
